Broadcast of the Tour De France could be considered NBCSN’s cockroach: it has persevered since 1999, through the days of Outdoor Living Network, then as the network was renamed Versus, then a merger with NBC Sports and now lives on NBCSN.
The challenge to revamp a broadcast tradition now older than today’s high school graduates was a bit staggering. Our solution was to go big. From the opener to the bumps and all the graphic elements in between, we worked to create an epic landscape to mirror the treacherous 2,200 miles of the race.
The wrapped fabric that reveals the iconic Arc de Triomphe was inspired by environmental artwork created by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. We chose the color to reference the "yellow jersey" of the tour leader.
